10 Great Canadian Online Fabric Stores

10 plus Great Canadian Online Fabric Stores

Print Friendly and PDF

Hello Canadian quilting friends! When I first started ordering fabric online, I initially went to the US online stores because of the lower prices. However, I quickly learned that I wasn't getting much of a bargain. It didn't take me long to realize I was better off shopping at Canadian online fabric stores. In some cases, the fabric prices may be slightly higher, but the price you pay online in Canadian is the price you pay without the duties, exchange rates, and high shipping costs to worry about.

Shopping USA: Let's do the math . . .
Shipping costs from the US can sometimes be outrageous. Also, you have to take into account the current Canadian/US dollar exchange rate and cross border duty charges

As of this post, the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar is around 1.30. That's right, right now our dollar is only worth around 0.70 cents compared to the US $1.00. This means when you shop US stores online, you're paying 0.30 cents more on the dollar for your fabric. For example, a fabric at $10 US will cost you $13 CAD, and $100 US can jump to $130 CAD! And that's before shipping costs and duty.

I still prefer to shop at my local stores, but below are 10+ Canadian online fabric stores including their shipping rates. This is not an exhaustive list. I add new stores periodically.

    3. Thank you sooo much for this! I am on a fixed income and this is fantastic! You know, it never ceases to amaze me how one company charges an arm and a leg for shipping/says what #1 said about how he cannot give shipping info because each package has to be weighed and measured and then the next company does a flat rate of $5.00 anywhere in Canada and has a loyalty program. Guess which company I'm going with??!! 😉

  4. Great list. However, I am increasingly disturbed to see pricing in half or even quarter yards. I know it does not have to be done that way, so it feels like a bait and switch game. I won't buy from a site that prices that way.

    1. I have found this pricing allows one to buy smaller amts for scrap quilting not a bait and switch game. I for one appreciate not having to buy a full yard of fabric. I have ordered from about five of these shops and the service is excellent

  9. Hi Monica - thanks so much for including Fabric Spark on your list. We're very happy to be here.

I saw the note about pricing in half yards from Wendy and thought I'd just take this opportunity to explain why online sellers do that. Many (or most) of the e-commerce platforms we sell on won't accept fractional units so if you price in a full yard, you have to sell full yards, most shoppers don't want that. Some online shops price in quarter yards, but that can be confusing, so half yards have emerged as a new standard unit for online fabric stores.

Note - There are some purpose-built quilt shop platforms that accommodate fractional units but they don't have all of the features that online shops need and don't work as well in search engines. Genuinely, there is no attempt to "bait and switch", most of us try to be really clear in our product listings explaining exactly how the pricing works. Hope that's helpful. Again, thanks for including us!

  10. I had great service from Sew Sisters...don’t forget our Canadian designers, too. SewFreshQuilts is Canadian, patterns are instantly downloadable on her Etsy shop, and they really are clear and concise. So many sources for us to use here! Thanks for the list, Jill in Calgary/Cochrane

  12. If there are any Western Canada online fabric stores you want to see here, you're welcome to let me know and I'll add them. This is not an exhaustive list and it would be very time consuming for me to make one.

  14. Clotheslinequiltandhandworks is in Newfoundland and Labrador. Pearl carries wonderful amounts of all kinds of fabrics to suit your quilting needs. She uses Canada Post and I find her shipping is very reasonable. She is great to talk to on the phone and will send you to another Canadian Quilt store if she does not have what you are looking for.

Also try Paynes Quilting in Northern Alberta. They are wonderful as well. She has a huge selection of fabrics. Give them a try when you are looking next. I have ordered from Clothesline and am over satisfied. She is great.

I do not recommend Sparrow Quilt Co. I have been waiting over five months for my order, and I still do not have my product. They have an F rating on Edmonton's BBB.
